New Web Hosting Directory Ranks 28,000 Providers Globally Using Data, Not Advertising

A new community-driven web hosting directory has launched with an unusual founding principle: no hosting provider can pay to improve their ranking.

HostList.io indexes over 28,000 active web hosting providers across more than 40 countries and ranks them using a proprietary scoring system called HostScore. The four components of the score are trust signals, profile completeness, data freshness, and performance indicators. No element of the ranking is influenced by commercial relationships between the platform and the providers it lists.

The platform was built by the team behind Seahawk Media, a WordPress services agency with over a decade of experience working with hosting infrastructure across client projects.

“Most hosting comparison sites exist to earn affiliate commissions,” said Gautam Khorana, COO and Co-founder of Seahawk Media. “The rankings reflect who pays the most, not who performs the best. We wanted to build something where the data does the work.”

The web hosting affiliate market generates billions of dollars in commissions annually. Publishers earn between $50 and $200 per referral when a user clicks a link and signs up with a provider. The result is a review ecosystem where the highest-paying providers consistently rank at the top, regardless of their actual performance.

HostList’s model removes this incentive entirely. The platform accepts no affiliate arrangements and offers no paid placement options. Providers can claim a free profile to manage their listing and add plan details, but doing so does not affect their HostScore ranking.

The directory covers the full range of hosting types: shared hosting, managed WordPress, VPS, dedicated servers, cloud hosting, and reseller plans. Users can filter by country, hosting type, and HostScore to find providers that meet their specific needs, rather than relying on a curated list selected for commercial reasons.

With over 28,000 indexed providers, HostList is one of the most comprehensive independent hosting directories available. Traditional review sites typically feature between 10 and 50 providers, almost exclusively those with active affiliate programs. The broader index surfaces smaller regional providers that deliver strong performance but do not participate in affiliate marketing.

“There are genuinely excellent hosting companies in markets like Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, and Latin America that never appear in Western review sites because they don’t run affiliate programs,” Khorana added. “HostList ranks them the same way it ranks any major global provider.”

The full HostScore methodology is published at hostlist.io/hostscore, allowing any provider or user to audit how rankings are calculated. The platform currently lists providers across more than 40 countries, with ongoing data enrichment to improve coverage and accuracy across the full database.

Hosting providers can claim their free listing at hostlist.io/claim. The full directory is accessible at hostlist.io.
