When we sat down with Champie Joyce Maptue Tagne, her passion for cybersecurity was unmistakable. Soft‑spoken but confident, she walked us through a journey that spans three countries, two degrees, and a growing body of research that is already shaping conversations around mobile security.
“I’m originally from Cameroon,” she began, “but Ghana became my second home. I went there to pursue my bachelor’s degree, and that experience changed everything for me.”
Champie’s interest in cybersecurity first took shape during her undergraduate studies in Software Engineering at Coventry University. She explained that her early coursework opened her eyes to the realities of modern digital threats. “I built a strong foundation in secure software development, software quality, and computer security,” she said. “But what really caught my attention was how vulnerable mobile applications were becoming. Every year, the threats evolved, and I wanted to be part of the solution.”
That curiosity pushed her toward deeper research. Today, Champie is completing her Master’s degree in Computer Science at Florida Polytechnic University, where she focuses on Android application security, malware detection, software quality, and the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) in cybersecurity. “I’m fascinated by how AI can help us detect vulnerabilities faster and more accurately,” she told us. “LLMs are opening doors we didn’t have before.”
One of her most significant contributions is SMELLDroid, a dataset she helped develop to support researchers studying code smells in Android applications. “SMELLDroid was born out of a simple idea,” she explained. “If we can identify patterns that weaken software quality, we can help developers build stronger, safer apps. It’s about giving researchers and industry professionals the tools they need to stay ahead of threats.”
Her work in data analytics has also played a major role in shaping her approach. “Data teaches you to think differently,” she said. “It forces you to look beyond the surface and understand the patterns underneath. That skill has helped me tremendously in cybersecurity, where everything is about identifying signals in the noise.”
Throughout the conversation, Champie returned to one theme: impact. Her goal is to bridge artificial intelligence, software engineering, and cybersecurity to create solutions that benefit researchers, industry, and society. “I want my work to matter,” she said. “I want it to help build trustworthy digital systems that people can rely on.”
Her journey from Cameroon to Ghana to the United States has shaped not only her academic path but also her worldview. “Moving across countries teaches you resilience,” she reflected. “It teaches you to adapt, to stay curious, and to keep pushing. Cybersecurity is global, and my experiences help me see it that way.”
As our conversation came to a close, Champie smiled and added, “Cybersecurity chose me. And I’m grateful it did.”
